THEATRE CLASSES

Since 1951, Junior Theatre has been proud to offer the very best in theatrical training and fun. Our classes develop each child's ability to speak well in any situation, express imaginatively, have fun, and dream big. We put the imagination to work, challenging creativity and causing it to rise to new heights. At Davenport Junior Theatre, we know that investing in our youth is the surest way to invest in our future.

Creative Theatre Fun (Summer Schedule)
Ages 3-4
Fun! Imagination! Game-play! This class uses creative role-play, mime, imaginary play, basic improvisation, movement, crafts, and games to develop a healthy and physical imagination. Your little one is sure to gain the confidence to succeed.

Acting (Summer Schedule)
Ages 5-6 / 7-9 / 10-12
New, dynamic, and fun each session, Acting develops students' ability to speak clearly, confidently, and creatively! This creative, high-energy environment provides basic theatre terminology, improvisation, characterization, vocal technique and physical skills. Students conclude class with a performance of their very own play! Join the adventure today!

This class can be taken multiple times, as new friends, games, and scripts will surround your child's imagination.

Advanced Acting (Summer Schedule)
Teacher Recommended, Age 8+
Upon mastering the skills of Acting, students are recommended into Advanced Acting. This class deepens the imagination and technique of storytelling. Class may use a variety of tools (i.e. monologues, scene work, short plays, character exploration, etc.) to develop new skills, while reinforcing old ones. The class will perform on our stage in the 10th week.

Since students develop their acting skills at different rates, enrollment in Advanced Acting is by teacher recommendation only.

Acting for the Camera (Summer Schedule)
Ages 9-12 / 12+
Focusing on the technique and skills required to perform on screen, students get the chance to see playback of their work. Special focus will be put on developing audition skills for commercials and films. Join us for this all new class!

Teen Acting (Summer Schedule)
Ages 13+
Whether you are a first time actor or experienced veteran, this class is an exciting challenge! Teen Acting is a great way to get professional theatrical training, some onstage experience, and meet other teens from around the theatre circuit in the QCA. The class culminates in a small performance on our stage during the 10th week.

Adult Acting (Summer Schedule)
Ages 18+
You are never too old and it is never too late! Whether you are a first time actor or a seasoned veteran, our class helps refine and deepen your onstage skills. We cover acting basics, stage technique, and different ways to approach the acting process. Class culminates in a showcase performance onstage in our theatre.

Theatre Improv (Summer Schedule)
Ages 9-12
Back by popular demand, Theatre Improv will have you thinking on the spot in no time! Through a collection of games and exercises, students develop the ability to think quickly and imaginatively. Class ends with a special improv demonstration onstage for family and friends.

Beginning Broadway (Summer Schedule)
Ages 5-6 / 7-9 / 10-12
Ever wonder what it’s like to be in a Broadway Musical? Now is your time to find out! Known as the “Triple Threat” in theatre, learn what it takes to dance, sing, and act. No one is required to sing a solo (though some may be offered), as this class is about building confidence.

Vocal Performance (Not currently offered. Check out our Beginning Broadway courses!)
Age 9-12
Vocal performance takes a closer look at building key skills. Participants will work on breathing exercises, singing as part of an ensemble, matching pitch and tone, and learning the basics to read music. Class only offered once a year! The class culminates in a performance of 2-3 numbers in our theatre during the 10th week.

Costume Design (Fall Session Only)
Ages 9+
Fashion! History! Art! All this and more goes into a great Costume Design. In this class, you will learn the basics of design theory, sketching, basic construction techniques, how to collaborate with a director, and more! Class only offered once a year!

Shakespeare (Winter Session Only)
Ages 10+
Romeo & Juliet. Hamlet. Midsummer. Over 400 years later, Shakespeare is still the best known playwright in the world! Our instructor has been in over 20 Shakespeare productions and his a teaching degree! This class will explore the language and text, while giving each actor new tools to succeed on the stage. Class will look at both structure and performance of these great works. Class only offered once a year!

Stagecraft: A World of Design (Winter Session Only)
Age 9+
What does it take to put up a theatrical production? How do you program lights, design sound, build a set, or collaborate as a designer with a director? This class will be hands on, learning all the work that goes behind the magic of theatre. Class only offered once a year!

Students must wear proper footwear that covers the whole foot. No flip-flops or sandals allowed. Students may not be allowed to participate in daily activities if they do not wear appropriate footwear. All students should wear pants, as this can be a physically intensive class.

Scenic Design (Not currently offered)
Ages 13+
What does it take to put up a Scenic Design for a production in the theatre? How do you collaborate with a director and design team? Scenic Design is an intense and fun study of what it takes to design for the stage. You'll look at different styles/genres of theatre, as you lay your plans for success. Learn about floor plans, elevations, color selections, drafting, and the countless other considerations made by a designer. This class will culminate in a sharing of your design materials.

Students must wear proper footwear that covers the whole foot. No flip-flops or sandals allowed. Students may not be allowed to participate in daily activities if they do not wear appropriate footwear. All students should wear pants, as this can be a physically intensive class.

Playwriting (Not currently offered)
Ages 8-12
Students will be guided through the steps of writing an amazing short play! Students will explore their stories by using their imagination, creativity, and sense of invention! Techniques of story-building, improvisation, sketch structure and dialogue, creative writing, and short in-class readings will be used in a step-by-step creative process. The class will be interactive and conclude in a sharing of some new plays for family and friends.

Clowning Around! (Summer Session Only) (Summer Schedule)
Ages 10-110
Learn the history of clowning, the clown code of ethics, proper makeup application, juggling, balloon basics, improvisation and more! Students will be part of a final skit along with Quad City Clown Troupe members at the end of the session in our theatre. Come clown around with us this summer!
