SCHOOL OF DANCE

Davenport Junior Theatre is proud to announce its all new School of Dance! Our program is intended for students of every level. While we do have performance showcases for the family to enjoy, we are a non-competitive dance program that focuses on the joy of learning and exploration. The skills built here will lead to a lifetime of confidence. All classes conclude with a sharing on our stage for family and friends!

Dance classes meet in the Dance Studio, in the lower level of Nighswander Theatre.

*Classes meet once a week at scheduled time.

Dance Attire
Appropriate dance attire is essential to a child’s ability to move properly and succeed in learning. The following dance attire is required for all classes and can be purchased locally.

All hair must be pulled back.
Students should arrive early to be ready to begin on time.

Ballet: Black leotard, tan or pink tights, leather pink ballet shoes, black ballet skirt (black jazz pants for boys) optional (Please, no fabric "house" slippers)
Jazz: Black leotard, tan or pink tights or black jazz pants, black jazz or ballet shoes
Tap: Black leotard, tan or pink tights or black jazz pants, black tap shoes
Hip-Hop: Loose-fitting and comfortable clothing, clean street shoes (Hip-Hop shoes preferred but not required)
Adults: Comfortable clothing that allows instructor to see form and posture, leather ballet shoes preferred

Ballet Solo

LEVELS EXPLANATION
Level I/II – Students will learn basic dance terminology and clarify technique. Class structure includes isolation and flexibility warm-ups for Jazz and Hip-Hop; barre and centre work for ballet and tap. All classes include dance combinations designed especially to build core basics. No previous dance experience necessary.

Level III/IV – For the student who is ready for more complicated technique and combination work. More rigorous classroom training will generate a stronger and more confident dancer.

Building Ballerinas (Summer Schedule)
Ages 3-4
Our tiniest dancers will learn ballet and tap fundamentals in this class. Focus is on having fun and developing basics and social skills.

Jazzin' Juniors (Summer Schedule)
Ages 4-5
Come move and stretch to upbeat music while building strength and coordination. Jazz positions and basic combinations will be taught while listening to fun music. (Building Ballerinas is a strongly recommended prerequisite to this course.)

Ballet I–V (Summer Schedule)
A classical dance form that is the foundation of most dance approaches today. Classes designed to provide proper training in ballet technique, alignment and terminology, incorporating the discipline that is an integral part of ballet.

Jazz I–V (Summer Schedule)
The most popular of the American contemporary dances utilizes techniques and movements from ballet and modern dance. Jazz is designed to develop expression of music through creative movement.

Tap I–IV (Summer Schedule)
Uses special tap shoes to make rhythmic sounds and combinations. Helps build timing, rhythm and coordination.

Lil Hip-Hop (Summer Schedule)
This course is made of high energy and contemporary routines using current moves. Popular music is used at a basic level for our younger hip-hoppers to develop coordination comprehension.

Hip-Hop (Summer Schedule)
This course is made of high energy, contemporary routines using current moves and popular music. Poopular music is used at a basic level for our younger hip-hoppers to develop coordination comprehension. Classes based on age.


ADULT CLASSES (Not currently offered. Check out our Adult Swing and Ballroom Workshop!)
No stress, no performing, just a little exercise and artistic expression. Class intended for dancers of all experience levels who would like to stay healthy and keep moving. Our adult classes will focus on a different dance style each session.
